William and Emma Brewer Elliott and their family
| Where date of death in uncertain, it is marked as "before 2000." |
First Generation
1. William (Ellit) Elliott Sr. was born roughly 1760 in either Virginia or Pennsylvania. He died before 1850 in LaRue County, Kentucky. William was not literate and spelled his name "Ellit." His children did the same. It was not until the third generation the spelling became Elliott. As early as 1787, he came to the area that is now roughly Hodgenville/Elizabethtown, LaRue County, Kentucky, where he joined other early pioneers. He can be found in early Nelson County tax lists, in the household of Benham Shaw. He helped settle the area and lived there the rest of his life, farming. In 1791, he probably fought in the battle between Gen. Arthur St. Clair and Little Turtle. William was one of the founding members of the South Fork Baptist Church, select minutes of which are transcribed on this page. For some early church and settlement history of the area, click here. The area is famous as the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln. The name of William's parents remains a mystery. It is possible he had a female relative named Mary or Molly who was the wife of Benham Shaw. There is no evidence he was related to the family of Capt. George Elliott of the Virginia Navy. Members of that family, (William Elliott then his father John Elliott), did move to the same area many years after William settled there so it is possible.
Here are William's census pages for Hardin County, Kentucky: 1810 page, 1820 page, 1830 page and 1840 page. An article on the 1810 taxpayers may be found on this LaRue county history page.
William married Susan or Susannah Brunk, daughter of John Brunk, on 26 Feb 1798 in Hardin County, Kentucky. Susan was born roughly 1780 in Virginia or Kentucky. She died in 1872 in Platte County, Missouri. She was an independent woman and once left the Baptist Church over the issue of slavery. (Select minutes from the church can be found on this page). It is said that she was a midwife. She had ten sons. After her husband died, she lived with her son George and his family in LaRue County, Kentucky; she can be found there in the 1850 census. George died shortly after that and she moved to Platte County, Missouri. She is listed there in her son John's household in the 1860 census. Although she is not listed in the 1870 census, her grave is in the Todd Cemetery in Platte County and is marked 1872. A photo can be found here. Susannah's father, John Brunk, was a friend of Dennis Hanks.

In about 1836, he was the first of the family to move from Kentucky. He settled in Platte County, Missouri. Later his brothers William, Charles and Whitfield moved to the same area (before 1850). His mother Susannah Brunk also left Kentucky and moved to her son's household before 1860. John was a prosperous farmer and before the Civil War owned slaves, the only member of his family who did. 55 F vi. Cynthia Elliott was born about 1844 in Kentucky. She died before 2000.
Charles and Rachel may also have had a daughter named Susan (b. abt 1838) and a son named William, born about 1842. There is a male and a female child listed in the 0-5 categories of the 1840 census so there may have been another son from the marriage as well. William was living with his uncle John Elliott in 1860. Perhaps when Susannah Brunk left Kentucky for Missouri, she was accompanied by grandchildren. However there is no record of the children in the 1850 census.
Susan married Uriah G. Mann in Platte County, Missouri on Nov. 6, 1855. She was married in the home of Charles D. Ellitt and the Justice of the Peace was John Ellitt. She died before 1920 in St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri. In the 1880 census, Charles Elliott Jr. (son of Charles, see below) is listed as a "nephew" in the Mann home. If my research is correct he would actually have been Susan's much younger half-brother but this is all speculation at this time.
William married Melinda or Malinda Hope in Platte County, Missouri. Some census records for Platte and Atchison County, Kansas hint at a possible connection. William and Melinda had six children, only one of whom survived in the 1910 census. She was named Annie and was born in April 1884 in Missouri. A young niece named Katie Elliott lives with the family in Platte County in 1910. She was born in March 1892 in Missouri. William and Melinda do not appear in the 1920 census. Ann married Arthur Riley Meadows and died Jan 27, 1924 in Topeka, Kansas.

Notes: "Buckhorn" means "Buchanan" County Missouri. "Cornsmith" is "Corinth." In the Battle of Buena Vista, the pension files state that as the soldiers were retreating, Whitfield fell and dislocated his right knee. One of the doctors who examined him said that it was prone to backwards movement. Whitfield also suffered a tuberular deposit in his left lung and was almost deaf. The last few years of his life he was paralyzed on the right side and confined to bed. One doctor stated that he suffered "considerable emaciation and gen(eral) disablitity." Physical descriptions in his files state his height was five foot six to eight inches, with white (once black) hair and blue or green eyes. He weighed about 130 pounds at one examination.
